How do I get bears to avoid my fence?
You can condition predators to avoid an electric fence by using bait. For
bears, place an aluminum can with rancid bacon or sardines on the fence line
connected to a live fence wire. Be sure to place it so all the "juices" don't
run out of the can.
How do I get wolves and coyotes to avoid my fence?
You can condition predators to avoid an electric fence by using bait. For
wolves and coyotes, place an aluminum pie tin smeared with peanut butter on the
fence line connected to a live fence wire.
Will the electric fencing I use for livestock and
containing other animals also keep out predators?
Not usually. If you are already installing a high tensile fence, you can
simply change the height of the bottom wire and alter the number and spacing of
wires to keep out predators. Also, electric wires will need to be placed
alternately on the outside of the fence as well as inside so the predators and
livestock will remain on their respective sides of the fence.
Temporary fencing is less effective against predators, as there
are an insufficient number of electric wires and the fence presents less of a
physical barrier. For rotational grazing,
we recommend the perimeter of the entire area be high tensile fencing, with the
temporary fencing inside using fewer wires to control the grazing of the
domestic animals.
